In Uncategorized on February 16, 2006 at 12:04 pmWhat is peace?
Peace begins within.
Peace is about love.
Peace is about understanding.
It is grounded in the relations of the everyday.
It is beyond politics.
Peace is something for all.
It is conflicts resolved with love, understanding and consultation.
It is grounded in principles of dignity.

Kids Will Fly
In Poetry on February 12, 2006 at 2:16 pmYou know they like to say that boys will
Be boys
And kids will be kids
But all I know is that kids will fly.
Yeah I know they might fly off
The chicken house pretending to be superheroes
Land in a mess
End up having to confess.
But they also fly off the handle
When grown ups don't listen
As they ask, "Why do you say,
Do as I say not as I do?
You know they like to say that girls
Will be girls
And kids will be kids
But all I know is that kids will fly
With imagination to take them anywhere
Make any future
Follow every rainbow
Not simply for its gold.
Today they're learning
- Evaluate everything you're told.
You know
kids will cry
kids will try
and if you really love them -
then they'll fly.

Response from Africa – to Gumboots 4 Peace – Feet for Peace
In Uncategorized on February 9, 2006 at 8:53 pmNow that I have been absorbed in African culture for 3 years, and all my close friends are African, I see the western countries with an African perspective.
I looked at the concept of expressing a wish for peace using a common simple piece of earthy footwear, the gumboot, as the vehicle to carry the peace message. Yes. A powerful symbol in Australia.
In Tanzania, the gumboot is a luxury item, rarely seen. Not an item worn by the common man. People wear thongs or bare feet when working on their shambas.
Probably one could express a peace message and place it on a battered thong. Peace to the people, and peace to the environment. Here there is little awareness of the effects of plastic, pollutants , clogged waterways and cooking with charcoal have on the environment. the environment is abused.
The common people struggle to survive. There is no social security system and massive corruption in government. Their minds are on their stomachs … how to get food into the stomach is a major concern for most people on a daily basis. And now that the rains have failed for the 2nd year, famine faces many people. They fear.
People use the maize that they have grown to brew local beer, because they get more money for the product. So alcoholism is increasing. Armed robbery gangs have increased in Dar-es-Salaam. Homeland security is more fragile.

Diligent Indolence

Extract from a poetic review of Archives in the Land a blog
by Ron Price
….
Sitting, standing, breathing
here at this online gallery
letting the space, the photographs,
the forms, the varied shapes,
the words, bounce off my
sensory emporium like art
works around the walls
of an art gallery: people
I hardly know come to life:
a beauty, a freshness, a newness.
……
”Just enjoy”, said the muse:
the smoothest of smooth worlds,
beautiful people, young, very young,
they pop up and up and down and down
and I stroll by with my eye trying to catch
with some of my quiet moments
some of their vitality from their young,
persistent faces bubbling over with life.
